Paper Things and Jingle Beans

The last time I "remember" having a real tree, I waved at it as my dad took it down the stairs and said, "Goodbye, Christmas."

I have to clarify. It sounds like my dad was gleefully gallivanting off with a dead Christmas tree, taunting me as he ran off with the embodiment of childhood Christmas joy.

I waved at the tree.

Actually, I don't remember that. My dad told me I said that. And I'm sure we had real trees since then, but my mom said she always killed the trees and they went with artificial instead since it's pretty hard to kill them.

B and I picked out a real tree a few weeks ago. We strung it all up with lights and I made snowflakes and polar bears and a gigantic tree topper from book pages. And then promptly forgot to water it. I forget to water it unless B reminds me.

It will probably die.

What's that joke?

The apple doesn't fall far from the {dead} tree....?

I also made this one out of paper. Since it's made out of a plastic hanger that The Bean broke and chewed on, she thinks it belongs to her. She likes to carry it around when it falls of that ledge. And it does. Because it's made out of a broken, dog-chomped plastic hanger.

She also very much enjoys stealing the bulbs off the Christmas tree and eating them. She also eats the tinsel by pulling it off the tree very slowly, waiting for me to notice and then chase her around yelling, "No! Tinsel is not good for dogs! Tinsel is not. good. for. dogs." I'm sure Louie {that's our 92 year old downstairs neighbor} thinks I have a dog named NoNotGoodforDogs.

The Jingle Bean is full of holiday spirit!

  1. I am TOTALLY impressed with your tree. I thought the topper was made out of burlap, too, so the fact that you made it from a book, IMPRESSIVE.

Curiously I wonder if you bought a book from the thrift store specifically for this, or if you used one you had laying around? I don't know. I was just curious because I see these all around pinterest, and feel so attached to most of my books and then begin to get nervous about it. I know. Don't ask. When I was home at my parents I went through old novels and got rid of 5 laundry baskets full of books that I will likely never read, or look at, ever again. I don't know why I get nervous. haha.

The bean is so cute! :) The Christmas tree bulbs look like toys- I'd say she's right. :) haha. Just kidding.. maybe she needs a new ball? haha..

I think it's totally fine that you're getting a couch now, instead of later. Moe and I lived in our apartment for about a month without a couch.. And about two weeks without a bed while we were moving. I told him my priorities for when we move (in this specific order) BED, Kitchen table, television, cable, kate spade bag, and then a couch. haha. It's appropriate right? We spent more time sitting on the floor instead of on the couch. (we had the worst couch ever, haha). I am excited for you guys though, couch and cable, whoa! :) haha.. It's so exciting!

I think it's true, "do without" makes so much more sense than "simpler" or whatever. Because things are significantly more complicated. To complete the dishes I really have to do it in stages.. because our dish rack is a joke. haha. (this is criteria for our new apartment when we move back to the states: dishwasher, hahaha)

You are a strong woman, Whitney! You've spent a lot of time away for Christmas.. Last year you stayed on St. Maartin, didn't you? It will be an experience to be in NY for the Holiday's.. Will you go to the city for NYE? :)

  2. I love your tree! It's so beautiful! And 'Jingle Bean' is just so cute - I would have a hard time punishing her if it wasn't for knowing that ornaments and tinsel are bad for dogs!
Love love love your decorations you made, too! They are so cute!

  3. Aw, your tree is great!
And the bean is a brat and reminds me of my little bugger who thinks that the tree and all it's decorations are a free invitation to steal, run and chew!
